What Season Is Your Marketing In?

Edition 10

Marketing on a budget? Let's get specific.

Most small businesses don’t actually have a marketing problem. They have a season problem.

When people say, “I need more marketing,” what they usually mean is, “Not enough people know I exist.” That’s not a budget issue. It’s an awareness issue. And awareness operates differently depending on where your business stands.

Large brands market in a reminder season. Their audience already understands what they do. Their campaigns reinforce familiarity. When you think of certain national brands, you don’t need an explanation. You need a nudge.

Early-stage and bootstrapped businesses are in a different season entirely.

You are not marketing promotions yet. You are marketing presence. You are not optimizing ad spend. You are establishing relevance.

That shift changes everything.

If you are unknown, scaling campaigns won’t fix it. Expanding platforms won’t fix it. Posting more frequently won’t fix it. What fixes it is clarity. You must clearly define who you serve and what specific problem you solve so your audience can mentally categorize you.

Broad positioning makes you invisible. Specific positioning makes you memorable.

Before spending money or increasing output, step back and ask:

  • Who exactly am I trying to be known by?

  • Do those people clearly understand what I do?

  • Am I communicating in a way that allows others to refer me easily?

When resources are limited, precision becomes your competitive advantage. You don’t need to dominate the market. You need to become recognizable within a defined space. Once awareness is established, marketing becomes more efficient. Conversations become warmer. Introductions become easier. Momentum builds.

But none of that happens until you correctly identify the season you’re in.

If you want to go deeper into how to market effectively without a large budget, including how to build momentum strategically once you’ve identified your season, I’ve outlined the full framework here:
